Messier-Bugatti-Dowty headquarters in Vélizy named after Jean-Paul Béchat

The headquarters of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty (Safran) was today named after Jean-Paul Béchat, a leading figure in the French aviation industry and also a key actor in the history of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty and parent company Safran.

The ceremony was held at Messier-Bugatti-Dowty headquarters in Vélizy-Villacoublay, near Paris, and was attended by his wife, Françoise Béchat, and her family, Philippe Petitcolin, Chief Executive Officer of Safran, Vincent Mascré, CEO of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, Pascal Thévenot, Mayer of Vélizy-Villacoublay, and current and former employees of the company and Safran.

Jean-Paul Béchat originally joined the Group in 1965, as a production engineer at Snecma. After holding several management positions, in 1986 he was named CEO then Chairman and CEO of Messier-Hispano-Bugatti, which became Messier-Bugatti in 1990. Under his direction, the company created Messier Services in 1990, then Messier-Dowty in 19941. Jean-Paul Béchat then served as Chairman and CEO of Snecma until the creation of Safran in 2005. At that point he was named Chairman of the Management Board. Jean-Paul Béchat passed away on November 24, 2014.

During the ceremony, Messier-Bugatti-Dowty CEO Vincent Mascré said, "It's both a pleasure and an honor to give the name of Jean-Paul Béchat to Vélizy, a site he created in 1991, and to pay tribute to the man who wrote several of the most important chapters in the history of Messier-Bugatti-Dowty and Safran."

Jean-Paul Béchat in fact instigated the international development thrust of what has become Messier-Bugatti-Dowty, as well as contributing to the modernization of the company's organization, management tools and industrial facilities. It was also Jean-Paul Béchat who initiated the construction of the company's headquarters in Vélizy, in the early 1990s.

Jean-Paul Colesse, Vélizy General Manager, added, "In nearly 25 years, Vélizy has doubled its workforce, and is now a pool of 1,200 talented engineers and other professionals. This dynamic growth, anchored in an area that has traditionally been turned towards aerospace, enabled us to plan ahead to meet the changing requirements of our customers, aircraft manufacturers and airlines alike. Vélizy is on the cusp of innovation, based on our design departments, test facilities and the multidisciplinary capabilities at this site."
