Safran Landing Systems ensures the nose landing gear design, its qualification, manufacture and support for the F-18.
First flown in 1995, the F/A-18 E/F upgrades the combat-proven night attack F/A-18 C/D built by Boeing. Building on the basic design and strengths of its Hornet predecessor, the F/A-18 E/F has greater range, a larger payload capacity, more powerful engines, enhanced survivability and a built-in potential to incorporate future systems and technologies.
The Safran Landing Systems nose landing gear is comprised of the shock strut, drag brace, launch bar and power unit. These major structural elements are manufactured from Aermet 100, the next generation in state-of-the-art high strength steels. This gear represents Safran Landing Systems' first application of this material which is known for its damage tolerance and resistance to crack growth- properties deemed essential to a carrier-capable landing gear.
